The Chosen are blood-blessed who can hear the White. The connection is not limited by space, as the Mad Artisan was able to hear the call of the White all the way from the Corvantine Empire. The White cannot function at it's full capacity without the aid of one of it's Chosen.
At this point, it is unknown what causes one to be a Chosen, nor if their is a different Chosen for each White.
